Buying
From finding the thing to handing over the money.
1. Find it
Start on the homepage, which sorts by what’s closest to you. Narrow it down by category, price, or distance, or browse a category page directly — tools, trailers, cars & trucks, and so on.
Two shortcuts: /free lists giveaways and /rent lists things available to rent instead of buy.
2. Message the seller
Tap Message seller on the listing. That opens a private thread you’ll find at /messages. Your email is never revealed to the seller.
Good first messages are specific. Ask about:
- Condition, age, and whether anything is broken or missing
- Whether it’s still available and firm on price
- For anything with a motor or a title: the VIN, serial number, or HIN, and whether they have the title or receipt in hand
- When and where they can meet
3. Arrange the pickup
Agree on a specific time and a specific public place before you leave the house. We curate Safe Exchange Zones for exactly this — typically police-station or municipal parking lots with cameras and good lighting.
Safe meetup rules
- Public place, daylight. Never a private garage or an empty lot after dark.
- Bring a second person for anything expensive or bulky.
- Inspect before you pay. Start the engine, run the tool, check every function. Bring a flashlight and a test battery if it matters.
- Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
- Walk away if it feels off. There is always another listing.
More detail on the Safety page.
4. Pay
For ordinary sales, Listd does not process the payment. You settle up in person, and most people use cash. Bank apps like Zelle work too — just send the money while standing in front of the item, after you’ve inspected it, never before.
- Never pay a deposit to hold an item you haven’t seen.
- Never pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto. These are the payment methods scammers ask for because they can’t be reversed.
- Get a receipt for anything titled. Both parties should keep a copy with the date, price, and VIN or serial number.
Rentals are different. Rentals are paid through Listd with a card so the rental agreement, fees, and damage protection actually apply. See Renting.
Reporting a problem listing
Report it if a listing is a scam, stolen, misleading, or prohibited:
- Use the Report control on the listing or in the message thread, or the Feedback button that floats on every page.
- Or email support@listdmarket.com with the listing URL and a screenshot.
We review every report. Full process on the Report a listing or user page. Not sure whether something is even allowed? Check Prohibited items.
If you think an item is stolen, don’t confront the seller. Report the listing to us and to your local police department. We run stolen-serial screening and can help — see Serial Watch.
