Trust & safety

The tools we build so you can deal with a stranger and not regret it.

ID verification

Identity verification runs on Stripe Identity in document + selfie mode: you photograph a government-issued ID and take a selfie, and Stripe confirms the two match a real document. Start at /verify-id.

  • Listd never receives your ID images. They go straight to Stripe; we get back a pass or fail and nothing else.
  • Verified members get a badge on their profile and rank higher in search results.
  • Verification is required to rent items out, because money moves and someone is handing over property.

Verification is one input into a member’s trust tier, alongside email and phone confirmation, review history, and account age. The Safety page explains how the tiers work and what each badge means.

Safe meetup tooling

We maintain a curated list of Safe Exchange Zones — mostly police-department and municipal lots that are public, lit, and camera-covered. Each one has its own page with a map and hours, and you can propose a spot to the other party directly from a message thread.

The habits that matter more than any feature we could ship:

  1. Meet in public, in daylight.
  2. Bring someone for anything big or expensive.
  3. Inspect and test before money changes hands.
  4. Never pay a deposit for an item you haven’t seen.
  5. Walk away when it feels wrong.

Reporting a listing or a member

Every listing and message thread has a Report control, and the Feedback button is available on every page. A human reviews every report. Depending on what we find, we hide the listing, warn the member, or ban the account.

Details on what happens after you hit report — and how to escalate copyright or law enforcement matters — are on the Report a listing or user page.

Stolen-property screening

Listd asks for an identifier on categories that get stolen the most, then screens it:

  • VIN for cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles
  • HIN for boats
  • Serial number for bikes, power tools, generators, and similar equipment

Identifiers are checked against stolen-property databases, including Bike Index for bicycles. A match pulls the listing for review. The whole program is documented at Listd Serial Watch, where you can also check a serial before you buy or register your own gear.

Serial numbers are never shown publicly — publishing one would help a thief claim the item. VINs are public on vehicle listings, since buyers need them to run a history report and they’re visible through the windshield anyway.

Community rules, in short

The full text is in our Community Guidelines. The summary:

  • Be a real person. One account, accurate profile, no impersonation.
  • List honestly. Real photos of the actual item, real condition, real price. No bait listings.
  • Only list what’s yours to list. Selling for someone else is fine — use the on-behalf flow so consent is on the record.
  • No prohibited items. See Prohibited items.
  • Keep it civil. No harassment, threats, hate speech, or discriminatory listings.
  • No off-platform pressure. Anyone rushing you onto another app, or asking for gift cards, wires, or crypto, is running a scam.
  • Honor your commitments. Show up, or cancel early enough that the other person can rebook.

Breaking these gets listings removed and accounts suspended. The Terms of Service are the binding version.
